Vienna night skating 2000
Suggestions, corrections or additions may be send to Andreas Kreuzinger [E/G]
Also have a look at the legal notes [E] and the privacy policy [E].
Other countries started years ago. Austria is a bit late. After a few tries
last autumn, it is planned to do it regularly.
What I'm talking about? The so-called "night skating". Skaters are meeting
in the afternoon (or in the night) and are skating together along a planned
route.
In some towns there is a fix route, in some others the route is changeing.
Some are skating on the road (with permission and often supported by the
police), others are useing sideways and cycleways.
Starting with 12th may 2000, every friday is skate night in Vienna.
Organized by the Grüne Wien [G] , a political party, the skater
meet at 10 p.m. at the Heldenplatz. They describe the
route of the next tour [G] on their web page. The skater are
escorted by the police.
Cyclists and microscooter driver are welcome too.
The skate tours are over for this year. But it will be continued next year.
I want to thank
Some comments to the photos [E]:
I take this photos with my digital camera [E]. The flash light is not very bright. So I
usually brighten up the photos digitally. (Normally it is enough to increase
the gamma correction value. Sometimes I play with brightness and contrast.) I
try to avoid to make the photos too bright so the sky seems to be grey instead
of black. If you find such photos please tell me.
If you want your photos to be added, send them to me. If your photos are
developed on paper you can send them to me so I can scan them and return the
photos. If you are going to send me photos by snail mail, please send me an
email so I can contact you if the photos didn't reach me.
If you want me to add a link to a skate related page (maybe yours?),
send me an email.
You will get full credit if I use material which is provided by you.
There are a few pages about
Skate nights
12. 5. 2000
- Number of skater: about 100
- Route: Heldenplatz - Neustiftgasse - Gürtel - Wiental -
Wienfluß - Urania / Schwedenplatz - Prater - Prater Hauptallee -
Tribüne Krieau
- Time: about one hour
- Photos: Can be found here [E].
Taken with my digital camera [E]. Some seem to be a little bit
experimental, because it's not easy to skate and photograph at the same
time.
- Comments: Not bad for the first time.
19. 5. 2000
- Number of skater: about 400
- Route: Heldenplatz - Burgring - Volksgartenstraße - Neustiftgasse -
Lerchenfelder Gürtel - Neubau Gürtel - Mariahilfer
Gürtel - Sechshauser Gürtel - Schönbrunner Straße -
Rechte Wienzeile / Hamburger Straße - Kärntner Straße -
Opernring - Burgring - Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring - Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Ring -
Schottenring - Franz-Josefs-Kai - Stubenring - Parkring - Schubertring -
Kärntnerring - Opernring - Burgring - Heldenplatz
- Time: 22:05 - 23:15
- Photos: Can be found here [E].
Taken with my digital camera [E]. They are still more experimental than
useful because the targets are moving - as I do. And the flash light is
very poor. The setting for night shots seems to delay the exposure time
and I think that is responsible for the wishy-washy lines.
I keep on testing the right settings for useable photos.
- Comments: Something must have gone wrong. We rolled at snail's pace
along our route. :(
First they are closing the streets for other vehicles. And then most
of the time the skater have to skate as slow as someone who is walking.
So why using the street? I'm skating faster if I use the sidewalk,
where I have to take care of other individuals which are crossing my way.
Many persons asked if the speed can be increased a little bit, but
nothing happend. One person said that we are going to travel back in
time if the speed is lowered once more.
Many thanks to the organisation team and the people who are helping
them. But if they are going to keep this speed, I won't skate
at this events anymore. Sorry, but I want to skate and not to
roll.

Hey, this time I got the right settings for the camera. The pictures are
better than the previous one. But the flash light is still very poor and
only acceptable for close-up shots.
- Comments: Speed, speed, speed. It's nice to see that some persons are
able to accept critic and try to correct the points of critic. :)

Comments are welcome (as usual).
- Comments: After the comment in the blackbox [G] discussion forum where someone stated that
it would be nice if there were more organization persons escorting the
skater, I asked Christoph Chorherr (one member of the
Grüne Wien [G]) if I could help them. They told me to be at
the meeting point (Heldenplatz) half an hour before the tour starts. So I
arrived 30 minutes past nine. I was asked if I could skate fast. After my
approval of this question I got the job to help the police to block the
roads.
That means: Start at the top of the crowd and if a police patrol
blocks a road you have to stay there so they can drive to the next road.
You have to stay and block the road until the whole crowd of skater
passed you and the closing car reaches you. Then you skate to the top of
the skating group or to the next police patrol (whatever comes first).
For this job you have to be in good condition because you need much
energy for short time periods.
It's a pity that some people don't follow the instructions.
It's so easy: Don't skate on the sidewalk and keep one meter on the left
side clear so that the escort persons can pass.

- Comments: I guess that the bad weather (cloudy and no sun - it looked
like it would start raining every moment) and the television broadcast
of the European championship of football seem to keep the people away
from this event. But doing sport is better than watching it.

- Comments: It seems that the rain keeps the people away. When we started
skating there was no rain, but the heaven was very cloudy. After 40
minutes it started raining and we had to skate back.

30. 6. 2000
- Number of skater: about 600 (some skater estimated that there were up to
1500 people, but that is a little bit to high IMHO).

Straße - Wiedner Hauptstraße - Karlsplatz - Karlskirche
- Time: 22:00 - 23:20
- Photos: Can be found here [E]. I
didn't use 16 photos because they were too dark.
- Comments: Better weather means more people (which means more fun). Maybe
we are able to motivate more than 1000 people to participate at this
event.
A local group of the Grüne Wien [G] gave a little party
at the Karlsplatz (our finish) and welcomes the skater.

- Comments: No rain. But a few teenager which were shouting loud how good
skateboarders are and so on. Hey kids, get a life. We need no war between
inline skater and skateboarder. Tolerance and environmental protection
(they destroyed some glass bottles) is so easy.
Back to topic: We had one german guest acting as
ordner [E].
And a jogger
was running with us. I don't know if he made the whole tour.

I thought that Conny [G] was taking some photos, but I
didn't find them on his page.
- Comments: This time it was a half marathon distance. (about 23 km)
We did it in one hour and fifty minutes because we made some breaks.
Some pedestrians
and a few car driver were enthusiasted about our demonstration.
Some car drivers (maybe the few who were stuck in the traffic jam) weren't
happy about that, but most of the skater seem to enjoy it.
Even if they were tired after that tour. But some found a lift offered by others.
A few other persons stopped along the Hadikgasse and used one of the
bridges to get on the other side. They were waiting there for the crowd
coming along the Hietzinger Kai and joined us when we passed them. That's
fine for those who weren't able to do the long tour or needed some rest.
We had one hand biker (here and here) who did the whole tour. One young person were not able to
skate but joined us the whole tour.

- Comments: Our longest tour (based on time or distance). Some stupid
people walked
through the crowd. They wanted to cross the street, but why can't they
wait until we passed them?
The Grüne Alternative Floridsdorf [G], a part of the
Grüne Wien [G], which is located in Floridsdorf (the district
of Vienna we were visiting this night), were distributing paper sheets
with information about the actual route (nice idea!) and some (political)
information about their district. The same group served refreshments
(take a look at this, this
and this) during
the break (which took about 20 minutes) at the ART 4 U (a location for
cultural events). Thanks for that. Update: The
Grüne Alternative Floridsdorf [G] created a
short article [G] about this event.
A person complained that I didn't make a photo of him. Finally I
got him. (It's the
man in the centre showing the victory sign. He seems to be happy about
the photo.)
If you would like to appear on a photo, ask me. I'm
usually wearing a ordner [E]
dress, a white helmet and a digital camera [E]. That looks like the person standing
on the right side on this picture. Hey, that's me, but where's my camera gone? ;)
Ernst is testing the condition of the road. He seems to like that,
because three weeks ago he did the same. ;)
Skater are helpful persons. This one helps a cyclist
by pushing her. ;)

- Comments: Some people couldn't find a wastebasket and dropped their garbage on
the floor. Shame on you. No, they were not skating with us.
One person was so fascinated about our tour that she took some photos.
Someone wanted me to photograph him. So I took two pictures of him. Enjoy.
It's a pity that a few car driver can't wait until we passed them.
They try to drive through the crowd of skater and often an ordner [E] has to stop in front of
them and stay there until all skater are away. The car driver try to
argument that they are in a hurry and so on. What the hell are they doing
so that they can't wait about ten minutes?

- Comments: The route was mainly the route of the Vienna Inline Marathon 2000 [E] which was done two days
later. Maybe this is the reason why there were so many skater
participating our tour this friday.
A few persons from the team Salomon [E] were skating with
us. Take a look at the photos: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
We made a break at the cinema Flotten [G] where the owner
of the cinema served water (and many skater were happy about that, as you
can see here and
here).
The skater were invited to watch a film (which will be played in the
cinemas in october), but a lot of the skater decided to skate back to
our starting point.

8. 9. 2000 and the distance was not so
high.)
- Photos: Can be found here [E].
Comments are welcome (as usual).
- Comments: A little bit windy, but no rain. Hm, it seems that this is
enough to keep a lot of skater away.
We had a new police officer who was leading the tour. He made a lot
of breaks where we didn't expect them, but that's okay. Not bad for the
first time.
A drunken car driver crashed in a police motorbike. Nobody was hurt.
(As far as I know.) To act as ordner [E] seems not to be as harmless as I thought.
Conny [G] was standing in front of his U4 [G] but he didn't
photograph us.
