Friday Night Skating Vienna 2001

Last year it was promised that the Vienna night skating will be continued this year. The ordner were invited to a meeting on may 14th, 2001 with some people of the organization teams to bring in ideas and suggestions and to get some information how the event is handled this year.
On may 18th, 2001 the Friday Night Skating Vienna was started.

• Comments: A short route to be sure not to expect too much from those who are new or out of condition. It's a pity that there were so few participants. Maybe they were not informed that we started this week or they kept away because it was raining a few hours ago.
  We had two pedestrian who decided to run a short distance with us. And one person was skating with quad skates (the old one which were called "Rollschuhe"). Sorry, I wasn't able to take a photo of him.

• Comments: The route has been changed because it was raining a few hours before we started and the planned route was too wet and too insecure to skate.
  We were only four ordner for the whole crowd. One at the top, one at the end and two for blocking the streets. I were one of this two and we had a lot of stress this time. But the police helped us by staying at the street and blocking it too.

• Comments: A long route (I still can't believe that it is that short.) but noone of us were complaining. A few car driver were still a little angry (but who cares?) and according to the policemen of another police station we were producing a traffic chaos at the Praterstern.

• Comments: It was a mistake that the wrong route was announced on the homepages and through SMS. (The announced route will be used next week.)
  We were skating the first part (starting from Heldenplatz and skating Burgring and Opernring) against the direction of the traffic. The police [E] had stopped the cars at the Opernring so we used the whole street.
  Some policemen didn't know what was going on when we came along their station.
  We made one stop when we skated along the "Gürtel" to avoid to much traffic jam.
  We had one person using a snake board for the whole tour.
  Serving refreshments after the tour is a good idea.

• Comments: The starting point was moved to the Rathausplatz because we were skating two rounds (of five) of the Vienna Inline Marathon 2001 [E] (which was happening a few days later). Some girls were still making preparations for this event. (Take a look at these pictures: 1, 2)
  The road surface of a little part of the road was removed but the street sign only warned that the marking is missing.
  In the second round it started to rain. That was not a problem but we had to slow down a little bit.
  And we had to slow down because in the second round this car was blocking a huge part of the street.

• Comments: The only bad aspect on this tour was that Michael was hurt by an aggressive taxi driver. One car was racing through the crowd. A taxi tried the same, but Michael stopped him by skating in front of the car. The driver got angry and shouted loud. In the end he attacked Michael. Some idiots really think that the streets are only for car driver.
